Steve Carey

Hometown:

Athens, PA

Class Year:

2009

Prior Education:

Boston College, 2001 - Double Major in English and Philosophy

What I Did Before Law School:

For four years, I worked in the admissions office at Friends Seminary, a K-12 private school in New York. I also taught an art elective in the middle school there. I spent last year working as a paralegal in the legal department at UBS AG. Additionally, over the past four years, I wrote and illustrated a daily comic strip that I self-published online and in a few magazines.

What I Am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:

It's still a little early to say. I do hope to clerk with a judge after graduation and would like to incorporate my interest and passion for education into my practice of law.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

The Penn tradition of taking our professors out to lunch in small groups has been a wonderful experience. Our access to professors and the many chances we have to meet with them outside of the classroom speaks to the (oft-mentioned) collegiality that really does distinguish Penn from other schools.

Professor Who Influenced Me Most (with a brief why):

Professor Wax – she impresses upon all of her students that we, as lawyers, must be prepared to answer any question no matter how difficult and that "I don't know" is never one of our answer choices. Plus, she's hysterically funny.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

I really enjoy going to the courtyard at lunch and taking a little time to decompress with my friends.

Why did you choose Penn Law?

When I visited, Penn struck me as a school that practiced what it preached. Everyone, from the Admissions Office, to the faculty, to the students, to the dean himself, was tremendously friendly, helpful and accommodating. And so far, Penn has lived up to its promise of collegiality. I can't imagine going anywhere else.
