STUDENT AND ALUMNI PROFILES Elena AidovaHometown:Pembroke Pines, FL Class Year:2010 Prior Education:New York University – BA in History Professional Experience Prior to Law School:I do not have an extensive work background because I came straight from Undergrad. What I Am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:I hope to practice in a firm in Miami for a few years and eventually open up my own firm! My Best Experience at Penn Law:There are so many that it is hard two choose one! I would have to say that my best experience is being a witness in the National Mock Trial Competition in Atlanta. I was astonished when I found out about the opportunity of taking part in such a competition as a 1L. It was an amazing experience to witness first-hand all of the motions and rules that we learn in Civil Procedure in action! (and a great study break, too!) Professor Who Influenced Me Most:Professor Wendell Pritchett. As a 1L, my legal writing section was invited to Professor Pritchett’s house for dinner and he opened his arms to us and helped guide us through any issues or questions we had. He is a great resource whenever I have questions about class, or law school in general. My Favorite Course:Professor Amy Wax’s Civil Procedure. I like Civil Procedure because it is probably one of the most challenging classes I have had thus far. Professor Wax expects us to know the details of the facts of the cases, the rules applied, the rules that could have been applied but were not, the reasoning the court gives, the reasons for why the court’s reasoning is wrong, and so on; but, that is what makes for a better read! Walking into Professor Wax’s Civ Pro class, you really have to know the ins and outs of the material! Meaningful Cross-disciplinary Experience at Penn:I haven’t had the chance to take any classes outside of Penn Law yet, but I plan on pursuing the Certificate Program at Wharton Business School. Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education? All the talk at Penn Law about collegiality is not just an advertising gimmick. From the moment I started Penn, everyone has been friendly and helpful; everyone from the admissions personnel to the students. The people at Penn have really done an amazing job at making each and every one of us feel like this is our home. Law school is a great experience, but it can be stressful at times, and who better to turn to than the person next to you. It gives me great comfort to know that whenever I need anything, my fellow classmates are there for me. Everyone is always willing help and to share notes and outlines! Another example is when, on Halloween, we had a Pumpkin Carving contest and my friends and I were contemplating whether to participate or not. We searched for a pumpkin, couldn’t find a good one, and decided against it. Dean Clinton witnessed our dilemma and offered to pick out and set us up with a great pumpkin, as long as we agreed to carve it. And sure enough, Dean Clinton found us a pumpkin and even provided us with the supplies. Now how many Deans have you seen to go pumpkin hunting for their students? My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:The Halloween experience. I hadn’t got dressed up for Halloween in years, so it was great to put on our costumes and spend a Halloween night in Philly with my Law School buddies. What I'm Most Proud Of:As far as my law school career goes, being the youngest law student in Penn Law’s class of 2010. My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:I love de-stressing at the gym; Mock Trial team. What I Did For Public Service:I am taking part in the Prisoner’s Legal Education Project, and plan to get involved with more clinics as a 2L. My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:When the weather is warm, the Courtyard is a great place to be! |
