Nicholas M. Mak

Hometown:

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), China

Class Year:

LL.M. 2003

Prior Education:

2002, Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL), The University of Hong Kong.
2001, Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), The University of Hong Kong.

Why I Chose Penn Law:

The University of Pennsylvania is well-known in Hong Kong as a prestigious educational institution. As an Ivy League institution, you have a quality guarantee, for both the faculty and the student body. As a law school, Penn Law is also one of the top in the United States - especially the quality of its LL.M. program.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

I like the diversity of the student body. It is truly great to be able to meet legal professionals from all around the world. The mix is wonderful. We have fresh graduates, academics, transactional lawyers, litigators, prosecutors, judges, and even bankers here. It is an invaluable experience to develop friendships with them and to acquire a deeper understanding on the culture and legal system of the other countries.

Professor Who Influenced Me Most:

Professor Stuart Diamond. He is able to stimulate people to think, discuss, and self-evaluate. He requires students to put theory into practice every week. The assignments are challenging, but I did get a lot from them.

My Favorite Course:

Small Business Clinic. It's practical; indeed it's real legal practice. I have to advise clients who are in need of legal services that are related to small business entities. This has given me the opportunity to obtain more hands-on experience, which will be extremely useful to my future legal practice in Hong Kong.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

The Philadelphia Orchestra performances - their music is divine!

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

Traveling to the other U.S. cities during weekends and term breaks. I also attend concerts frequently.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

The University Bookstore is a nice place for me to read magazines and books of all varieties. The collection there is quite comprehensive.
