What I Did Before Law School:

Prior to attending Penn Law, I served as an officer in the Taiwan Coast Guard where I was responsible for teaching training courses to law enforcement officials regarding operations to prevent smuggling and illegal immigration.

Why I Chose Penn Law:

I was drawn to Penn Law because it is an Ivy League law school and is well known for its collegial environment and interdisciplinary approach to legal studies. Moreover, its ideal location in the middle of the Northeast Corridor allows me to have easy access to New York City and Washington D.C.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

In February 2003, the LL.M. Association organized “International Afternoon,” where LL.M. students from more than a dozen countries displayed their folk crafts and traditional cuisine. It not only enriched the diversity of the law community but gave us a better international understanding.

Professor Who Influenced Me Most:

Professor Kim Lane Scheppele, with whom I took Terrorism and Democracy, frequently encouraged international students to express opinions from different perspectives and gave insightful comments on our exams. I admire her enthusiasm for teaching and efforts to get involved in constitutional reform in Hungary, Russia, and Afghanistan.

My Favorite Course:

I found very rewarding the class of Law and Economic Reform in Contemporary China taught by Professor Jacques deLisle. This course enhanced my understanding of China’s legal structure and the ideologies behind the rules. Furthermore, comments from Chinese practitioners in class gave me first-hand information on the topic.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

I enjoy going to different restaurants downtown. Hanging out with friends and having a drink at a pub or dinner in Chinatown are some my favorite activities.

What I'm Most Proud Of:

In the fall semester, I conducted research for Professor Harry Reicher on specific defenses raised in the Nuremberg Trial to charges of major human rights violations. Analyzing cases and writing memos greatly benefited my pursuit of a career in international law.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

I appreciate that Penn Law regularly hosts conferences that I can attend. Diverse topics range from civil rights, entrepreneurship to the energy crisis. Distinguished professors, lawyers, officials from the government and international organizations such as the World Bank, the U.N. come here to share their expertise on given issues.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

My favorite spot on campus is the Graduate Student Center (GSC). Besides offering free coffee, the GSC holds many activities for grad students, including language chats, ski trips, and even lectures on stress relief and tax filing.

How’s the Interaction Between LL.M. and J.D. Students at Penn Law:

All courses (except the summer courses Legal Research and Foundations of the American Legal system) at Penn Law are taught for LL.M. and J.D. students together. This approach promotes the interaction and friendship between the two student groups.

Currently, two German LL.M. students are teaching J.D. students E.U. Antitrust Law in a workshop. In addition, LL.M. students offered roundtable discussions that attracted many J.D. students to discuss comparative legal systems in several countries, such as Japan, China, and Taiwan.
