Berna Ackali

Hometown:

Ankara, Turkey

Class Year:

LLM, 2003

Prior Education:

LL.B. Ankara University Law School

What I Did Before Law School:

I worked as an associate for four years at Pekin & Pekin Law Firm in Istanbul.

Why I Chose Penn Law:

I chose Penn Law School because of its good reputation and its excellent faculty members. Also, its programs with other graduate schools at Penn, such as Wharton and Annenberg School for Communication had a big influence on my decision.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

The International Day organized by LL.M. students was my best experience at Penn Law. I witnessed all the LL.M.s and their families dressed in their traditional clothes, with displays of ornaments they brought from their homes, as they served local food of their countries to the faculty members, J.D. students and the staff. I believe all the attendees enjoyed this event very much.

Professor Who Influenced Me Most:

It is really hard to choose just one professor who influenced me the most. I should admit that even though they would be two opposite sides of a coin, both Professor Michael Wachter and Professor William Tyson influenced me as I decide about my future professional plans. They were both extremely strong academically and their interaction with the students was very positive – assuring that one would not one to miss one class.

My Favorite Course:

My favorite course was Negotiation and Persuasion. In between traditional law courses, this course had a very different approach to gauging our professional success by focusing on our ability to negotiate and persuade.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

My favorite Philadelphia moment would be within the first week that my husband and I moved here. We were waiting for our friends to join us to watch a public concert in the Rittenhouse Square. The weather was really nice, and right in front of us, the members of Tango Society were dancing in the park with people passing by.

What I'm Most Proud Of:

As a consequence of this year, I am most proud of being a part of a very selective alumni group of international young professionals from all around the world.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

I attended many wonderful conferences organized by various clubs and groups of Penn Law and Wharton. Also, I enjoyed the rich performance schedule of Annenberg Center. Nevertheless, I will certainly miss relaxing at yoga classes in between library breaks, organized by Yoga Club of Penn Law.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

I loved buying my lunch from the food trucks on Walnut & 34th, eating it whilst sitting on a bench on Locust Walk, and watching the Penn Community walk by.
