About Us

The Animal Law Project (ALP) focuses on the twin goals of strengthening the legal status of animals and encouraging animal advocacy. ALP works to achieve these goals by:

  • Assisting individual attorneys and organizations with legal research regarding animal issues;
  • Organizing and presenting legal education workshops for the public;
  • Providing web-based resources for animal activists, advocates, and students interested in the field of animal law; and
  • Working with animal advocacy organizations (to the extent allowed by the Penn Law Public Service Office)

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of animal law, projects involve a variety of legal topic areas and methods of lawyering. Co-chairs aim to select and develop projects of interest to students which involve different viewpoints on animal legal and ethical issues and avoid committing ALP to any specific ideological position outside of the general mission of animal advocacy.
