Public Service by Topic: The Choice is Yours

Penn Law is absolutely committed to public service. Our goal is quite clear: to create a Penn Law student experience that will become the catalyst for a life-long commitment to pro bono and public service legal work - as part of our graduates' careers, in whatever field they pursue.

To accomplish this goal, we have developed an all-encompassing public service program at Penn Law that is:

Experimental through a pro bono requirement that puts students in touch with the legal needs and concerns of the community.
Educational as part of the curriculum and the subject of a major symposium held annually at Penn Law.
Career oriented for those seeking to specialize in public service. Working closely with Career Planning & Placement, we help students identify and find positions in public service or public interest work.
Supportive in the funding Penn Law makes available to make public service possible for many Penn Law students.

All students participate in the public service program, by fulfilling the Pro Bono Requirement, and the program is an integral part of the Penn Law community.

Here are just a few examples:

  • 73 percent of the class of 2007 exceeded the required number of hours needed for graduation.
  • Students actively participate in organizing and attending the Edward V. Sparer Conference and other educational components of the program.
  • The annual Equal Justice Foundation Auction, run by students, draws attendance internally from Penn Law students, faculty and staff and externally from alumni, the Philadelphia legal community, and others interested in raising money to underwrite summer public service awards.
  • Studies have shown that a higher percentage of Penn Law graduates perform pro bono in their careers.

We hope by the time you have read the pages that follow, you will have a much better sense of the scope and excellence of this program.

Should questions still remain, we would love to hear from you.
