2010 International Summer Human Rights Fellows (ISHRF) Dinner

On October 5, Dean Michael Fitts presided over a dinner to recognize the work of the ten 2010 International Summer Human Rights fellows. At the dinner, fellows presented on their experiences and discussed some of the key legal issues they encountered during their placements. Professor Sarah Paoletti and senior administrators joined Dean Fitts to hear more about the fellows' experiences and acknowledge their dedication and hard work. Special thanks to Elise Luce Kraemer for hosting this event. The October spotlight section below lists where these fellows and other Penn Law students worked abroad this summer.

Penn Law Travel

In September, Cary Coglianese spoke in Ottawa to the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice.

Jill Fisch delivered a September 24 lecture at Queen's University in Ontario on the topic of "Proxy Access and the Limitations of the SEC Rule-Making Process." The lecture was part of a series, sponsored by Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, which brings internationally recognized business law scholars to Queen's. The distinguished lecturers deliver papers of the highest scholarly caliber to engage students, faculty and alumni in discussions on contemporary business law topics.

Howard Lesnick has recently returned from Ireland, where he gave a lecture at University College Cork on Oct 5. The public lecture, sponsored by the Department of the Study of Religions with the Law School, addressed the topic "Can Liberal Religion Ground Moral Imperatives?"

Charles Mooney is in-residence as a visiting scholar at Waseda University, Tokyo for Fall 2010. Additional international travel he undertook in September included a presentation in Rome on intermediated securities at a colloquium sponsored by the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), followed by two days representing the US government at the UNIDROIT Emerging Markets Committee for the Geneva Securities Convention. Also in September, Mooney made a presentation on intermediated securities at a symposium sponsored by the University of Luxembourg and the University of Geneva on the topics of the Geneva Securities Convention and the draft European Commission's Securities Directive.

In November, Christopher Yoo will represent the Penn Center for Technology, Innovation and Competition (CTIC) at a conference on "Equal Access Issues in Communications Law," jointly sponsored by CTIC and Seoul National University. The conference will assemble a unique combination of distinguished speakers, including Martin Cave (London School of Economics), Eli Noam (Columbia University), Bruce Owen (Stanford University), and Matthew Spitzer (University of Texas), as well as regulators, academics, and industry leaders from the Republic of Korea.

Recent Events

Legal Reform in Iraq and Afghanistan, Sept. 23-24, 2010

Penn Law and the National Constitution Center hosted a two-day conference on issues of law and legal reform in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event was sponsored by ACE Rule of Law Fund and panelists from around the world presented on a variety of topics related to legal issues facing Iraq and Afghanistan. A video podcast of conference session is online.

New Student Group: Penn Law National Security Society

A new student group was recently formed for students interested in the intersection of national security, international politics, and the law. The society will bring in speakers on substantive topics (e.g. detention policies, "extra-judicial" targeting, laws in conflict zones) as well practitioners in both government agencies and law firms to provide networking opportunities and career guidance. Students interested in becoming involved should send an email to Eric Lorber at elorber@law.upenn.edu.

Fund Raising Event for Pakistan Flood Victims: October 16

Hall of Flags, Houston Hall, 7:00pm
Join Penn student groups and Penn Law LLMs at a banquet dinner to raise money for victims of the recent floods in Pakistan. Admission is free, but a minimum $5 donation is suggested.

China Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections: October 18

Silverman 240A, 7:00pm
China Town Hall is a national day of programming on China involving 50 cities throughout the United States. Penn Law and the Center for East Asian Studies will host David M. Lampton, dean of faculty, George and Sadie Hyman professor and director of China studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies for a discussion moderated by Professor Jacques deLisle. Following Professor Lampton will be a webcast Q&A with Penn alumnus Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., U.S. ambassador to the People's Republic of China.

Salvatori Research Awards Deadline: October 20

The Center for Italian Studies offers annual research grants endowed by the late Henry Salvatori. These are stipulated for short-term research projects in any area of Italian Studies and are open to all graduate students and standing faculty at Penn. The awards are designed to support planned research with a definite program of endeavor. Upon completing their research, award winners are asked to present a talk about the activities conducted under the auspices of the Salvatori grant. Application details.

2010 Global Forum at Penn Law on Comparative Health Care Law and Policy: October 27-31  

The Global Forum will bring together faculty and students from Penn Law, Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main, Tsinghua University (Beijing), University College London, and Waseda University (Tokyo) to participate in an intensive five-day program examining cross-cultural, cross-border approaches to health care law and policy. Participants will have the chance to work on team projects and will visit the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for a first-hand look at issues related to healthcare provision, including meetings with the Transplant Unit and the Bioethics Center.

Immigration Rights and Constitution Law: November 10

Levy Conference Center, 5:00pm
Professor Yolanda Vazquez, immigration attorney Joseph Hohenstein, and Sunita Patel from the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York will discuss the constitutional and practical concerns raised by the Jose Padilla case and SB 1070 and what these two events tell us about constitutional law and immigration rights today. This event is presented by the Penn Law Immigration Rights Project in collaboration with the American Constitution Society. A reception will follow the panel discussion.

Price Moot Court Deadline: November 15

Oxford University's Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy is hosting a Moot Court competition on media law and policy. Teams from around the globe will travel to Oxford at the end of March and present their cases to a panel of international judges. The deadline for entry is November 15, and more information can be found on the Moot Court website.

Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) Fellowship Deadline: November 17

The International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX)is now accepting applications for 2011-2012 grants to support policy relevant field research in countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. IARO Fellowships cover the cost of international airfare, a living/housing stipend, visa support, travel insurance, and access to the resources available at 25 field offices within the region. Japanese Studies Fellowship Program Deadline: December 1

The Japan Foundation is accepting applications for funding for scholars and researchers involved in Japanese studies in the fields of the humanities and the social sciences to conduct short-term research in Japan. Program Description.

Islam, Islamophobia, and Muslims in America: October 19

A panel discussion of Islamophobia and Muslims in America featuring Iftekhar Hussain, who is engaged in local interfaith educational initiatives, Zain Abdullah, whose work focuses on identity formation and the intersection of religious, ethnic, and racial processes around the world, and Raed Jarrar, an Iraq consultant for the American Friends Service Committee. Sponsored by the Middle East Center and the American Friends Service Committee.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide: October 19

Christopher H. Browne Center for International Politics 2010-2011 Rena and Angelius Anspach Lecture featuring Sheryl WuDunn, whose bestselling book has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and other major media outlets. WuDunn has led the development of the Half the Sky multi-media effort to create a thoughtful, effective philanthropic strategy that includes an online social action campaign, a documentary series and a television special. She was the co-winner of the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for her reporting from Beijing of the Tiananmen Square protests.

The Politics of Social Justice in India: October 27

Anand and Jeet Khemka Distinguished Lecture by Pratap Bhanu Mehta, President, Centre for Policy Research. Dr. Mehta is President of one of India's most distinguished think tanks. This lecture will examine the discourse of social justice in contemporary India and the ways in which it arises out of the intersection of caste and politics. Dr. Mehta  will also look into the historical origins of this discourse and the sense of self and moral psychology that underlies it, which argues that what is at stake is the meaning of India's constitutional project.
