IP Writing Contests
These are a few writing contests in the field of intellectual property of which the PIPG is currently aware. If you know of any others, or if any of the information here is outdated, please send an e-mail to pipg@law.upenn.edu. If possible, please send the information in the format below: competition, organization, deadline, web site, and length and subject matter criteria. Thanks!
Pay close attention to the rules of each competition before submitting anything.
  • Some competitions require the right of publication or the right of first refusal to publish.
  • Some competitions also require anonymous submission, i.e., name of author and name of school appear on the cover letter or e-mail, but not in the body of the paper.

Competition: Robert C. Watson Award
Organization: AIPLA
Deadline: July 1 of each year

Length and Subject Matter Criteria:
"Papers should be approximately the equivalent of 10 law review pages including footnotes (30-40 pages typed copy)"; "on a subject relating to the protection of intellectual property written or published between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005."

Competition: George Hutchinson Writing Competition
Organization: Federal Circuit Bar Journal
Deadline: Postmark date June 1 of each year

Length and Subject Matter Criteria:
typically 20 pp, no more than 50 pp; "Papers must deal with a topic that lies within the substance, procedure or scope of the specialized jurisdiction of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit."

Competition: Berkeley Technology Law Journal Writing Competition
Organization: Berkeley Technology Law Journal
Deadline: Late February of each year

Length and Subject Matter Criteria:
"wide variety of topics at the intersection of law and technology"; no longer than 50 pages, including footnotes.

Competition: UCLA JOLT Writing Competition
Organization: UCLA Journal of Law and Technology
Deadline: mid-February of each year

Length and Subject Matter Criteria:
"discussing a current legal issue within either the intellectual property or technology fields"; "should be typed in double space (12 point font) in law review format and must be sent electronically to submissions AT lawtechjournal.com."

Competition: Stanford Law & Tech. Rev. Annual Paper Contest
Organization: Stanford Law and Technology Review
Deadline: Oct. 31 of each year

Length and Subject Matter Criteria:
30 pages or less (double-spaced text, single-spaced footnotes), relevant to key issues at the intersection of law and technology, electronic submission only to papercontest@law.stanford.edu.
