Welcome to the Federalist Society at Penn Law School!
The Federalist Society is one of the most vibrant, fun, and intellectually engaging organizations at Penn. If you are interested in learning more about and engaging with today’s most pressing legal and public policy issues, please spend some time with us.
We are an organization of ideas and relationships. While we do stand behind some foundational principles of the law, rather than merely propping up any one set of pre-established beliefs, we seek to ensure that the Penn community benefits from considering the best arguments on both sides of any issue. That is why we are committed to hosting debates and panels as our primary activities.
We are also interested in building strong relationships among our members. In addition to simply socializing together at events, our group strives to serve as a resource—particularly to 1Ls and 2Ls—for helping everyone succeed in classes, in journal competitions, and in obtaining top legal jobs and clerkships. In this effort, we begin with a unique position of strength given the Federalist Society’s vast and loyal network of prominent Justices, Judges, attorneys, and scholars.
We welcome you to join us!
For more information or to join our email list, please contact Rick Bold (bold@law.upenn.edu), or any of our Board members listed below.
In addition to joining the Penn chapter, please join the National organization to take advantage of travel scholarships and to receive the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy. Go to https://www.fed-soc.org/membership/step1.asp. |
“The courts must declare the sense of the law; and if they should be disposed to exercise WILL instead of JUDGMENT, the consequence would be the substitution of their pleasure to that of the legislative body.”

“It has been my pleasure to speak at many Federalist Society gatherings around the country, and I think one thing your organization has definitely done is to contribute to free speech, free debate, and most importantly public understanding of, awareness of, and appreciation of the Constitution. So that’s a marvelous contribution, and . . . in a way I must say I’m jealous at how the Federalist Society has thrived at law Schools.”
