Recognition of the Chinese Legal Studies Association

Today the CLSA became an offical student organization at Penn Law, with access to the resources noted below:

RE: Chinese Legal Studies Association

This will serve as recognition of the Chinese Legal Studies Association, based on the mission statement and petition you have presented.

Recognition permits you to place a mailfolder among the student group folders and claim a space on the group boards in Tannenbaum basement. If a mailfolder or group label is needed, please see Julie Colleluori in the Dean's Office. It also allows you to set up a group email list, and develop a website. For these instructions, please inquire at the ITS Help Desk.

Finally, as a recognized student group, Chinese Legal Studies Association may apply for a grant from C.S.R. and from the Dean's Speakers Fund. Please follow the standard procedures if you are seeking funds.

Petition to Establish the Chinese Legal Studies Association at the University of Pennsylvania Law School

Today the Chinese Legal Studies Association submitted the following petition to Gary Clinton, Associate Dean for Student Affairs:
Mission Statement
The mission of the Chinese Legal Studies Association is 1) to encourage the study of Chinese law and 2) foster professional connections between students, academics and practitioners of Chinese law.

To fulfill this mission, the CLSA will:
  1. Host an annual symposium bringing scholars to campus to discuss current research in Chinese law;
  2. Publish the symposium papers in a bilingual online journal;
  3. Organize regular events focused on current Chinese legal issues to build networks among J.D. and LL.M. students, alumni, and faculty;
  4. Facilitate improved relationships between law firms with China practices and University of Pennsylvania law students, in the hope of providing exposure to the business community in China and increased access to career opportunities; and
  5. Manage a website and mailing list to detail events and opportunities related to Chinese law.
