Grading Results & Information
Spring 2004
Overview
Student evaluation (i.e., assigning grades) is an unpleasant but unavoidable business. In the following pages, I’ve tired to make the grading process—which can often be rather mysterious for students—as transparent as possible.
As a general matter, I was quite happy with the way the grading system worked out. As was the pattern throughout the course, I was pleased with the performance of the students: It was abundantly clear that most, if not all, students grasped the basics of what I was hoping the course would offer.
Basics
As described on the Course Information page, the grading scheme consisted of three components, with weights being dependent upon individual students' choices with respect to the Commentary Posts:
in-class exam (60% to 90%) + commentary posts (0 to 30%) + course participation (15%)
