JD/MA International Studies
Lauder Institute
Legal and business issues have become increasingly globalized/international in scope. Professionals conversant in the law, culture, and business practices of countries around the world are prepared to assume positions of leadership in international law, business, and policy making in the public, private and civil society sectors. The program allows students to earn both a JD and an MA in International Studies in three years, and provides an opportunity for an intensive immersion in a foreign country during one summer.
Penn Law gives credit for four courses in the Lauder program toward the JD. The MA degree itself requires 14 courses, including four courses that can be taken in the Law School curriculum and five intensive language courses. In most cases, as noted, students in the joint program can earn the MA and the JD degrees in three years.
Students apply separately to each department. Applications to the Lauder program are welcomed contemporaneously with the Law School application or during the 1L year. The LSAT is sufficient for both departments; no additional testing is required. Students applying to Lauder must have strong, business quality fluency and expect to continue their studies in a language other than English.
Here is an example for completing the program.
