INFORMATION ABOUT PENN LAW

Penn Law's distinctive reputation as a small, supportive and rigorous place for the training of leaders in our profession attracts some of the nation's most competitive J.D. students. By successfully recruiting the most promising legal minds, we regularly replenish a candidate pool appropriate for every type of legal practice and every employer's needs - including yours.

The Student Body

Penn Law enrolls an entering class of approximately 240 J.D. candidates annually - chosen from the top 5% of J.D. matriculants nationwide - and an additional group of approximately 90 international law graduates from over 20 different countries studying for the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree. All have extremely strong credentials and diverse prior experience.

Our matriculants are admitted under extremely competitive standards. Each entering J.D. class of approximately 240 students is selected from over 5,600 applicants. In recent years, Penn Law matriculants have a median undergraduate GPA of 3.8 and a median LSAT score in the 98th percentile. More than a third of each class is comprised of members of minority groups.

The Academic Difference

The cross-disciplinary emphasis at Penn Law distinguishes our legal education, both from within the Law School and through the academic opportunities available across the University. More than half of our standing faculty have advanced degrees beyond law, bringing their broader perspectives to classes within the Law School. Students are encouraged to pursue law-related courses at the other renowned graduate and professional schools - and to earn certificates or joint degrees, or simply to consider different approaches to problem solving.

We are confident that our students who are exposed to a variety of law-related areas will be more able (and comfortable) navigating the complex legal issues in their careers.

Student Organizations

The Law School has a wealth of organizations founded and run by students to support their education through programs, panels, and information sessions. Some of these include: Asian-Pacific American Law Students Association; Black Law Students Association; Latino American Law Students Association; Environmental Law Society; Feminist Working Group; and International Law Society.
