The ELC provides pro bono transactional legal services to entrepreneurs and businesses in the start-up or growth phase. Our clients work with second and third year law students under the close supervision of two full-time faculty members who are licensed Pennsylvania attorneys.
The ELC serves both for-profit and non-profit organizations under the theory that sound fundamental business principles and practices should underlie any venture. Though the ELC serves a broad spectrum of clients, it is firmly committed to the goal of economic development through assisting locally owned and operated businesses that will have an impact on distressed communities by providing needed jobs, goods, and services. The ELC works with many other organizations focused on economic development to achieve this goal.

The ELC began in 1982 as one of the first transactional legal clinics in the country. Over the years it has counseled nearly 1,700 businesses through the work of over 600 students. It is one of eight legal clinics at the Gittis Center for Clinical Legal Studies at Penn Law.
