Bio
Clyde Summers’ teaching and writing is primarily in the fields of labor and employment law, and in comparative and international labor law. In addition to contracts, he presently teaches labor and employment law, labor arbitration and international and comparative labor law, but in his 60 years of full-time teaching he has taught more than 20 different courses and a variety of seminars. He has co-edited five casebooks on labor and employment law, and published more than 125 law review articles and contributions to symposia. His writings cover a wide spectrum, but his dominant focus has been on the rights of the individual worker in relation to the employer, and in relation to the union. His writings presaged, and he participated in the drafting of the Landrum Griffin Act designed to protect and promote the democratic process in unions. His seminal article advocating statutory protection against unjust dismissal provided the model for the Commission of Uniform State Laws’ Model Employment Termination Act. His present research and writing concern the human rights of workers under free trade agreements, and on compulsory arbitration clauses in individual employment contracts. In addition to his scholarly writings, Summers has been an active arbitrator and for 20 years was Umpire for the anthracite coal industry.
Before coming to Penn, Summers taught at the University of Toledo, University of Buffalo and Yale University. He has been a visiting professor at Cornell, Minnesota, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, Utah, Sendai (Japan) and Witwatersand (South Africa) universities. He has presented nine name lectureships in this country and has lectured in ten other countries. He has held Ford, Fulbright, German Marshall, Guggenheim, and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. He has been awarded honorary degrees from the University of Leuven (Belgium), University of Stockholm (Sweden) and the University of Illinois. He is presently President of the World Congress of the International Society for Labor Law and Social Security.
