This is a joint project of the Uniform Law Commission, the
Uniform Law Conference of Canada and the Mexican Center
of Uniform Law. The objective was to
draft acts providing a legal framework for unincorporated nonprofit
associations to be adopted in the United States,
Canada and Mexico. All the acts are to be harmonized in the
sense that they incorporate the same basic principles. The first step in the process was to develop
a joint Statement of Principles. The
Drafting Committee representatives from each country then drafted acts based on
these principles. All the acts were then
reviewed by the entire Drafting Committee at a meeting held in March, 2008, in Tucson, Arizona.
The U.S.
version of the Act, which is named the Revised Uniform Unincorporated Nonprofit
Associations Act since it is a revision of an Act approved by the ULC in 1996,
is what will be considered for approval at the 2008 Annual Meeting. A copy of the Statement of Principles, the
final drafts of the two Canadian statutes and the final draft of the Mexican
statute are included in the Annual Meeting materials for your review and
comment.
