The Archives of the American Law Institute (ALI)

The ALI was established in 1923 by judges, lawyers, and law professors in an effort to promote the clarification, simplification, and scholarship of the law. The ALI Archives contains over 700 cubic feet of material documenting the administration, organization and work of the Institute, from early projects like the restatement of basic legal subjects to a collaboration with NCCUSL in developing and monitoring the Uniform Commercial Code. The Archives of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL)

NCCUSL is an organization established in 1892, comprised of lawyers, judges and law professors appointed by the states for the purpose of drafting proposals for uniform and model laws, and working toward their enactment in legislatures. There are over 300 cubic feet of papers in the NCCUSL Archives, most of them donated by individual commissioners, who maintain their own records in the course of working on studies and drafting projects. The National Bankruptcy Archives (NBA)

In 2000 the Biddle Law Library and the American College of Bankruptcy collaborated to establish the National Bankruptcy Archives (NBA), a national repository of materials relating to the history of debtor-creditor relations, bankruptcy and the reorganization of debt. The NBA currently contains over 500 cubic feet of personal papers and institutional records. (more...)

The William Draper Lewis Papers

William Draper Lewis was Dean of Penn Law at the turn of the 20th Century and founding director of the American Law Institute in 1923. This collection documents Lewis' personal life and spans the years 1874-1949. (more...)

The David L. Bazelon Papers

In 1949, President Harry S. Truman named David L. Bazelon, one of the youngest judges ever appointed, to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, often described as the country's most influential court next to the Supreme Court. The 212 linear feet of the Bazelon Papers, which cover the years 1941-1993, include cases, speeches, lectures, correspondence, meeting materials, and subject files documenting his years on the bench as well as other professional activities and affiliations. The Bernard G. Segal Papers

176 cubic feet of Bernard G. Segal Papers document Penn Law alumnus Bernard G. Segal's myriad activities outside of his work as a lawyer at Schnader, Harrison, Segal and Lewis, including his life-long relationship with the University of Pennsylvania. 35 scrapbooks created and maintained by his wife, Geraldine R. Segal, preserve mementos from Segal's career and personal life. (more...)
