GIFT ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Honorable Arlin M. Adams, L’47, HON’98 and Neysa Cristol Adams, CW’42 made a $500,000 gift in support of the Arlin M. Adams Professorship in Constitutional Law. Judge Adams spent 18 years on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and three years as secretary of public welfare in Pennsylvania. He was editor-in-chief of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review and is a former chairman of the Board of Overseers. Judge Adams received the Law School’s Distinguished Service Award in 1981 and the James Wilson Award in 2001.

The Annenberg Foundation contributed $2 million to help establish a chair in Constitutional Law in the name of the Honorable Arlin M. Adams. Judge Adams has had a long and distinguished career on the bench and in public service, having served 18 years on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and as secretary of public welfare in Pennsylvania. Leonore Annenberg succeeded her husband, Walter, as chairman and president of the Foundation.

Tracy Anbinder Baron, L’95 and Robert Baron contributed $250,000 to establish the Anbinder Baron Endowed Public Interest Scholarship. The scholarship supports students who demonstrate commitment to public service. Ms. Baron is a resource attorney in the Knowledge Management Department of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. Mr. Baron is a vice president of the First Marblehead Corporation.

The Honorable Harold Berger, EE’48, L’51 contributed $300,000 toward the Harold and Renee Berger Seminar Room and to support Annual Giving. Judge Berger is chair of the Friends of Biddle Law Library. A former judge on the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia, he is senior partner and managing principal of Berger Montague P.C.

John G. Berylson and his daughter, Jennifer, L’05, made a major contribution for a new classroom in Gittis Hall. Mr. Berylson is chairman of GCC Investments, Chestnut Hill Ventures. Mr. Berylson and Jennifer are trustees of the Richard Smith Family Foundation, one of the most active family foundations in New England.

Roxanne Conisha Bok, C’81 and Scott L. Bok, C’81, W’81, L’84 have made a major gift to establish the Bok Family Visiting Faculty Fund. The fund will provide support to scholars from around the globe to teach mini-courses at Penn Law for two to three weeks per year. Mr. Bok is president of Greenhill & Co., Inc., an acquisitions and restructuring advisory firm that he joined as a managing director in 1997. He is also a trustee of Penn. Mrs. Bok edits children’s books.

Charles I. Cogut, L’73 and Ellen Cogut contributed $300,000 to help establish the Robert H. Mundheim Professorship and to Annual Giving. Mr. Cogut is the head of the Mergers and Acquisitions Practice Group at Simpson, Thacher and Bartlett. He serves on the Penn Law Board of Overseers, the Board of Advisors of the Institute for Law and Economics, and as an advisor to the Journal of International Economic Law. His daughter, Pamela, will graduate from Penn Law School this year (’07).

Alma Cohen, FA’44 contributed $250,000 to create the Sylvan M. Cohen Scholarship Fund for students with an interest in public service law. The Fund is named for her late husband, Sylvan Cohen, C’35, L’38, a former Law School overseer and long-time chair of the Friends of Biddle Law Library. Mr. Cohen was of counsel in Drinker Biddle & Reath’s Real Estate Practice Group and chairman of Cohen, Shapiro, Polisher, Sheikman & Cohen.

Cozen O’ Connor made a $2 million gift to establish the Stephen A. Cozen Professorship of Law. The professorship honors firm founder and chairman, Stephen A. Cozen, C’61, L’64, who is a Law School Overseer and received the Penn Law Distinguished Alumni Award ("The Goat") in 2006. Cozen O’ Connor was the first law firm to endow a chair at Penn Law School.

Pamela F. Craven, CW'74, L'77 and William R. Craven have made a $250,000 gift in support of the General Endowment and Annual Giving. Ms. Craven is senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary of Avaya, a global provider of business communications applications, systems and services. Her daughter, Stephanie, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006.

Pamela Daley, L’79 made a $1 million gift for the purpose of establishing the Pamela Daley and Randy Phelps Endowed Fund for Business Law and to support Annual Giving. Ms. Daley is a member of the Board of Overseers at Penn Law School, where she taught Federal Income Taxation of Partners and Partnerships for eight years. She received the Alumni Award of Merit in 2004. She is senior vice president for Corporate Business Development at GE.

Richard D’Avino, W’77, L’80 and Pamela Murphy, L’79 have made a $250,000 gift to the General Endowment and Annual Giving. Mr. D’Avino is a member of the Law Alumni Society Board of Managers and past chairman of the Benjamin Franklin Society. He also served as Penn Law’s national chair of Annual Giving. He is vice president at General Electric Co. and leads the tax group at GE Capital Services. Ms. Murphy taught legal writing at LSU Law School and practiced family law with Sachs, Greenebaum, & Taylor before retiring in 1986 to raise their two boys.

Mark B. Davis, L’75 and Yoly Davis made a total gift of $1 million to establish the Davis-Villamil Scholarship for first-year students and to support Annual Giving. The need-based scholarship will be awarded to first-year students, preferably from Puerto Rico. Mr. Davis was appointed to the Penn Law Board of Overseers in 2006. He is chairman of PMI Retail Property in Puerto Rico, the largest retail management company in the Caribbean.

Mark A. Ellman, W’78, L’83, has made a significant contribution to establish the Mark A. Ellman and Anne S. Ellman Loan Forgiveness Fund, which will provide financial support to graduates engaged in public service. Mr. Ellman has 20 years’ experience in the insurance and asset management sub-sectors as an investment banker at Credit Suisse, Wasserstein Perella, Morgan Stanley, UBS and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. He headed the insurance practice at DLJ and Credit Suisse, and in 2004 he became co-head of the Global Financial Institutions Group at Credit Suisse.

Marcy Engel, L’83 contributed $300,000 to the School’s General Endowment and to Annual Giving. Active in the Penn Law community, Ms. Engel serves on the Penn Law Board of Overseers and has been on the board of the Journal for International Economic Law. She has also served as a class agent and chair of her Reunion Committee. She is general counsel of Eton Park Capital Management.

Myer Feldman, W’35, L’38 has made a $300,000** gift to establish the Rebecca Feldman Scholarship Fund, which provides need-based financial aid to students. Mr. Feldman established the scholarship in memory of his mother. Mr. Feldman practiced law in Washington, D.C., where he was deputy special counsel to President John F. Kennedy and counsel to President Lyndon B. Johnson. He received the Alumni Award of Merit in 2005. Mr. Feldman passed away in March, 2007.

Steven S. Fischman, L’68 made a $375,000 gift to establish the Steven S. Fischman Endowed Scholarship Fund to provide merit- and need-based financial aid. Mr. Fischman is president of New England Development, a major real estate development firm headquartered in Boston.

Joseph Gato, L’84, WG’84, and Susan Gatto made a major gift to establish the Joseph and Susan Gatto Scholarship Fund and to support Annual Giving. Mr. Gatto joined Lehman Brothers in 2005 as vice chair and chairman of Global Mergers and Acquisitions. Prior to that, he was a managing director at Goldman, Sachs & Co. As chairman of Consumer Products Banking, he played a leadership role in the development of the firm’s practice in consumer products and mergers and acquisitions. He is a member of the Board of Overseers at Penn Law, and serves on the advisory boards of the Institute for Law and Economics and the University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Economic Law.

Howard Gittis, W’55, L’58 contributed $5 million to the General Endowment. A wing of the Law School complex was named Gittis Hall in his honor. In 1991, he funded a new facility for the Gittis Center for Clinical Legal Studies. An emeritus Overseer, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award ("The Goat") in 2003. Mr. Gittis is vice chairman and chief administrative officer of MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings Inc.

Perry Golkin, W’74, WG’74, L’78 and Donna O’Hara Golkin, WG’77 made gifts of $2.4 million for annual giving and to establish a professorship. Mr. Golkin sits on the School’s Board of Overseers and on the board of the Institute for Law and Economics. He has been a member of famed investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. for 20 years.

The Stanley and Nancy Grossman Family Foundation has made a major gift to the Penn Law Public Interest Loan Repayment Assistance Program. This fund will be used to help retire law school debt of graduates who pursue public interest careers committed to bringing justice to low-income individuals, families, and communities. Mr. Grossman is the senior partner of Pomerantz Haudek Block Grossman & Gross LLP, one of the premier law firms in the areas of corporate and securities class action litigation. Nancy Jacobs Grossman is a 1967 graduate of the College for Women, and is director of student life at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Their son, Judd, is a graduate of the Law School’s class of 2004, and the College in 2000.

Paul G. Haaga, Jr., L’74, WG’74 and his wife, Heather, have made a total gift of $2 million to support the Campaign. One million is for the Robert H. Mundheim Professorship; another million will be designated for the naming of the Heather and Paul Haaga Classroom in Gittis Hall. Mr. Haaga is a member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers and recipient of the Alumni Award of Merit in 2006. He is vice chairman of Capital Research and Management Company, the third largest mutual fund company in the United States.

Tonny K. Ho, L’80 and his wife, June Yuson, contributed $350,000 to establish the Shao I. Ho Endowed Scholarship Fund in honor of his father. The Fund will award financial aid to 1L students with records of high academic achievement and interest in public service. Mr. Ho is a partner in the Business Reorganization and Restructuring Department of Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.

Leon Holt, Jr. L’51 and June Holt made a $1 million gift to establish the Holt Program in International Trade Law. The gift will be used to develop a program of conferences, workshops and lectures on international issues related to the global economy. Mr. Holt served on the Penn Law Board of Overseers for almost a decade and was an adviser to the Institute for Law and Economics. He retired as vice chairman, chief administrative officer and director of Air Products and Chemicals in 1990.

Osagie O. Imasogie, GL’85 has contributed $250,000 to establish the Osagie & Losenge Imasogie Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will provide financial support to an incoming J.D., LL.M. or S.J.D. student who grew up in Africa or is a citizen of an African country. Mr. Imasogie is a member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers and a lecturer at the Law School; he was voted Best Adjunct Professor in spring 2006. He is co-founder of Phoenix IP Ventures in Philadelphia.

Murray Kushner, C’73, L’76 contributed $1 million to renovate Class Room 214 in Gittis Hall. Mr. Kushner is a member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers. He is president of SK Properties, a prominent real estate development firm based in New Jersey.

Paul S. Levy, L’72 and his wife, Karen, made a $6.2 million gift in support of the Levy Scholars Program, which promotes interdisciplinary education. The Levy Scholars Program began in 2003. Mr. Levy, chairman of the Penn Law Board of Overseers, received the Law School Distinguished Service Award in 2004. He is the founding partner and senior managing director of JLL Partners, a private equity investment firm.

Rachel M. Lipschutz, L’85 and Mark W. Lipschutz, L’85 made a $250,000 gift to establish the Lipschutz Endowed Scholarship Fund to benefit high-performing law students with financial need. Mr. Lipschutz is a founding partner and chief executive officer of the Caribbean Property Group, an investment group in Puerto Rico. He is also of counsel and chair of the Real Estate Group of Kronish Lieb Weiner & Hellman LLP. Ms. Lipschutz owned a real estate firm from which she retired in 2005.

Antonio Magliocco, Jr., L’77 and his wife, Carla Solomon contributed $350,000 to establish the Antonio Magliocco Endowed Scholarship. Mr. Magliocco is a member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers. He is vice chairman of Quaker Equities, Ltd.

The Benjamin & Mary Siddons Measey Foundation contributed $1 million to support the William Maul Measey Chair in Law and Health Sciences. William Maul Measey, who graduated from the Law School in 1898, was a corporate attorney in Philadelphia.

The Leo Model Foundation, Inc. contributed $500,000 to establish the Model Environmental Faculty Research and Development Fund. Allen J. Model, L’80 is Foundation chairman. He is managing director of Overseas Strategic Consulting, Ltd. in Philadelphia.

Robert H. Mundheim and Guna Smitchens Mundheim, CW'59, CGS'07 with their children, Susan M. Mundheim, C'90, FA'90 and Peter M. Mundheim, L'96 contributed $1 million to create the Mundheim Family Fund for Financial Aid. The gift supports scholarships or interest-free loans to students in need. Mr. Mundheim was Penn Law dean from 1982 to 1989, during which he launched the campaign to build the Nicole E. Tannenbaum Library building, established the nation's first mandatory public service program at a major law school, and furthered its interdisciplinary initiatives.

James Nevels, L’78, WG’78 made a $1 million gift to establish the Nevels-Fitts Scholars Program. A member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers, Mr. Nevels received the Alumni Award of Merit in 2006. He is chairman of The Swarthmore Group, an asset management firm that is one of the largest minority-owned businesses in the country.

The Stickley Trust has established the Philip Newman Scholarship Fund. Philip Newman, L’17, was an authority in real estate law who played a major role in the acquisition and development of most of the properties lining the perimeter of Rittenhouse Square. In 1961, his firm, Newman & McMaster, merged with what is now known as Blank Rome. He served as senior partner and senior counsel, the latter title created by the law firm and now used widely at other firms.

Jeanne Olivier, L’79 contributed $250,000 to the General Endowment and Annual Giving. She is a partner in the Project Development and Finance Group of Shearman and Sterling LLP, based in New York. Ms. Olivier is a former member of the Penn Law School Board of Overseers.

Richard C. Pepperman II, L’90 has made a $250,000 gift to the General Endowment and Annual Giving. Mr. Pepperman is a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, where he is deputy managing partner of the Litigation Group. He clerked for Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Derek Nicholas Pew, L’93 and his wife, Wendy Pew, contributed $350,000 to establish the Derek and Wendy Pew Scholarship Fund for first-year students. Mr. Pew was appointed to the Penn Law Board of Overseers in 2006. He is president of The Furst Group, an international communications provider, and co-founder of Boathouse Communications Partners and Remi Communications.

In honor of his 50th reunion, Harvey Porter, L’58, has established the Porter Family Scholarship Fund, which will award need-based scholarships. Mr. Porter is a member of the Class of 1958 Reunion committee. Porter retired in 1996 as president and CEO of Regent National Bank.

James J. Sandman, L’76 has made a $225,000 gift to the General Endowment and to Annual Giving. Mr. Sandman is a senior partner at Arnold & Porter, where he served as managing partner from 1995 to 2005A member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers, Mr. Sandman was executive editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif.

Richard P. Schifter, L’78 has made a $1 million gift to the General Endowment and $50,000 gift to Annual Giving. Mr. Schifter is a member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers. He is a managing director and partner at Texas Pacific Group, a private equity firm.

Cary Schwartz, W’66, L’69 and Elaine Schwartz, CW’67 contributed $700,000 to endow the Samuel and Jean Rothberg Scholarship Fund. Mr. Schwartz is founder and president of Blackhill Capital, Inc., an investment counseling and asset management company.  Ms. Schwartz teaches economics at a private girls' school and has written a book:  Econ 101 ½ , Everything You Never Learned About the GNP, the Deficit and Other Mystifying Economic Facts of Life.

Jodi J. Schwartz, W’81, L’84, WG’84, has made a generous donation to establish the Jodi J. Schwartz and Steven F. Richman Endowed Scholarship Fund to provide financial support to Penn Law students and graduates. Ms. Schwartz, a partner at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, specializes in the tax aspects of corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, spin-offs and financial instruments. Richman is a 1984 graduate of the Law School.

Paul Shapiro, C’64, L’67 and Carolyn Goffman Shapiro CW’64 made a $500,000 gift to the Paul E. Shapiro Fund and to Annual Giving. Mr. Shapiro is chairman of Q Capital Strategies, a firm founded by his son, Steven Shapiro, C’92, WG’97. Paul Shapiro is a member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers.

Robert C. Sheehan, L’69 and Elizabeth Sheehan contributed $500,000 to the General Endowment and to Annual Giving. Mr. Sheehan, a member of the Penn Law Board of Overseers, received the Alumni Award of Merit in 2004. He is the executive partner of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, one of the largest law firms in the United States. A retired teacher, Ms. Sheehan is a member of the executive committees of the Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York, Inc. and of the Legal Aid Society of New York.

Alvin L. Snowiss, C’52, L’55 and Jean Snowiss made a $500,000 gift to fund the Alvin L. Snowiss Professor of Law, established in 1999. The chair supports scholarship in the fields of antitrust law, economic regulation, law and economics, and environmental or corporate law. Mr. Snowiss is founder and senior partner of Snowiss, Steinberg, Faulkner & Hall, LLP.

Myles H. Tanenbaum, W’52, L’57 made a $350,000 gift to the General Endowment and to Annual Giving. Mr. Tanenbaum, an emeritus overseer of Penn Law School, was the lead supporter of Tanenbaum Hall, home to Biddle Law Library; classrooms; a student lounge and student publications offices; and the new Admissions and Graduate Program offices. Mr. Tanenbaum is vice chairman of A Wish Come True, L.P. and previously chairman of Arbor Enterprises.

Robert I. Toll, L’66 and his wife, Jane, have made a total gift of $12 million, one of the largest in Law School history. The gift supports the Toll Public Interest Scholars, the Toll Loan Forgiveness Program," and the Albert and Sylvia Toll Scholarship Fund. Mr. Toll is Chairman and CEO of Toll Brothers, Inc. In 1991, he established the Albert and Sylvia Toll Scholarship Fund in honor of his parents. Mr. Toll serves on the Penn Law Board of Overseers and received the Distinguished Alumni Award ("The Goat") in 2005.

Deborah and Kenneth Tuchman have made a generous gift to establish an endowed scholarship in their name.
Ken is a Vice Chairman of Dresdner Kleinwort Securities in New York and Chairman of the firm’s corporate finance practice for the Americas. In addition, he oversees the global consumer and retail industry groups. He previously was a Vice Chairman at Wasserstein Perella and prior to that was the co-head of the Global Mergers & Acquisitions Group at Lehman Brothers. Prior to joining Lehman Brothers, he practiced securities law at Fried, Frank Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. A magna cum laude graduate from SUNY at Buffalo, he was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma and received the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award. Ken earned JD and MBA degrees from the University and serves on the Board of Overseers for the Law School.
Deborah, a graduate of Michigan Law School, serves as Counsel in the investment management practice group at Skadden Arps in New York. Deborah and Ken reside in New Jersey and have four daughters: Erica, Jillian, Hallie and Rebecca.

Alan and Barbara Washkowitz, PAR’02 have made a major gift to establish the Washkowitz Endowed Scholarship Fund. Alan H. Washkowitz is a former managing director of Lehman Brothers, where he headed the Merchant Banking Group. Mr. Washkowitz retired in 2005 to become a private investor. He serves as a director of L3 Communications Corp. and Peabody Energy Corp. The Washkowitz’ son, Peter, received his undergraduate degree from Penn in 2002 and graduated from Penn Law in 2005.

Wolf Block Schorr & Solis Cohen contributed $250,000 to establish the Wolf Block Schorr & Solis Cohen Scholarship Fund, which will provide merit- or need-based financial aid to first-year students. The Philadelphia law firm was founded by Horace Stern, who later served as Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and Morris Wolf, who graduated from Wharton and Penn Law School in 1903. Mr. Wolf received an honorary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974.
