Two-Decade Quest Ends with Creation of Alexander Chair

The chairholder will be devoted to the study of civil rights
and race relations — a fitting tribute since no couple in Pennsylvania
exerted more of an impact on the civil rights movement
than the Alexanders.
Sadie T.M. Alexander was the first African American in the
United States to earn a Ph.D. in economics. She entered the private
practice of law with her husband following her graduation
from Penn Law School, and hence dedicated her career to securing
the rights of people underrepresented due to race or gender.
In 1946, President Truman appointed her to the President's
Committee on Civil Rights.
