The Robert G. Fuller, Jr. Professor of Law: Jason Scott Johnston

Jason Scott Johnston was named the Robert G. Fuller, Jr. Professor of Law. Professor Johnston also serves as the director of POLE (Program on Law and the Environment), which he founded at the Law School in 1998. The program promotes multidisciplinary research in environmental law and regulation. POLE’s objective is to further our understanding of the evolution of federal environmental and resource law as well as the possibilities for new market and decentralized approaches. Through POLE Penn Law trains a new, transactional generation of environmental lawyers.

Professor Johnston has taught environmental law since joining the Penn Law faculty in 1995. He arrived from Vanderbilt Law School where he was on the faculty from 1989 to 1994. Before that, Professor Johnston was a Senior Fellow in Civil Liability at Yale Law School, an associate professor of law at Vermont Law School, and a clerk for The Honorable Gilbert S. Merritt, U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit. He earned a J.D. in 1981 cum laude from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Economics in 1984 from the University of Michigan where he was the Aloca Fellow in Law and Economics.

The Fuller Professorship was established in 1989 under the terms of a gift by Robert G. Fuller, Jr. L’64. Though designated primarily for a scholar in the field of real property and natural resources law, Mr. Fuller supports the use of the chair to recognize the contributions of outstanding scholars in other fields of critical importance to the Law School. Michael A. Fitts was the previous holder of the Fuller Chair until he was named dean in 2000.

David Skeel Strikes It Rich With Bankruptcy

Debt’s Dominion: A History of Bankruptcy Law in America (Princeton University Press, 2001) the first nonfiction book written by David A. Skeel, Jr., Professor of Law, could not have been better timed. Although it may have seemed to be odd to start researching the history of bankruptcy a few years ago during dot-com fever and unprecedented economic growth in the United States, he was onto something. Since September, Professor Skeel has been nationally recognized as an expert in bankruptcy, bailouts, and the Enron scandal, called on by the media for appearances on Nightline, NPR’s Marketplace and Radio Times. Skeel has been quoted in the news and has had Op-Ed articles published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Los Angeles Times, and several other national and international newspapers. He has presented readings of Debt’s Dominion at bookstores in Nashville and Philadelphia.
