Is he a political prisoner or a tax cheat?
Last December a panel of Russian experts discussed the intriguing
case of oil tycoon Mikhail Khordorkovsky, who has
been in a Siberian prison on charges of tax evasion since October
2003.
As Assistant Professor William Burke-White explained, the
case has drawn international attention from activists, who accuse
the Russian government of taking retribution against the
businessman because he supported democratization and opposition
candidates. Khordorkovsky is challenging his conviction in
the European Court of Human Rights.
