| Janeira and Linder Win
Keedy Cup Competition |
1 - 2 |
Jennifer Janeira, L’07 and Craig Linder, L’07 won the
Keedy Cup last January in a
spirited debate about a school
desegregation plan in Seattle
that was before the U.S. Supreme
Court.
Janeira also won Best Oralist. She and Linder competed
against Niall O’ Donnell, L’07 and Aretae Ortiz, L’07.
The case came before the Supreme Court after a group of
parents filed suit against the school district because their children
were not, or might not be, assigned to the school of their choice
due to a number of factors including race. The parents contended
that the school district violated the Equal Protection Clause in its
use of what amounted to a racial quota. The school district argued
that its plan is constitutional because, among other reasons, it promotes
the educational benefits of diverse school enrollment.
