A. Leon Higginbotham Jr. was appointed a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1964, and a judge of the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in 1977. His association with the University of Pennsylvania was a long and distinguished one: Adjunct Professor of Law from 1971 to 1992, Trustee of the University from 1968 to 1994, and member of the Law School's Board of Overseers from 1978 to 1990, serving as its chair from 1979 to 1992.
