MEDALLIONS AND INSCRIPTIONS

Thirty-six medallions and two inscriptions surround the hundred-year-old, newly renovated Silverman Hall at 34th and Chestnut Streets. They enshrine some familiar and not-so-familiar figures from European and American legal history along with, at the 34th Street entrance, James Wilson and George Sharswood, two giants in the history of the Law School. For an insightful overview of these "greats" in the context of legal history and education, please see Professor Sarah Barringer Gordon's article, "Chiseling Legal Tradition."
